COVID-19: RUSSIA SAYS IT DEVELOPED TREATMENT BASED ON ANTI MALARIA DRUG

The agency said its drug was based on mefloquine, which is used to prevent or treat malaria. The drug will allegedly provide effective treatment for COVID-19 patients with varying severity. According to the agency's statement, the drug prevents virus replication in cells and as a result, stops the inflammatory process caused by the virus. FG ANNOUNCES NEW RESUMPTION DATES FOR SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The Federal Ministry of Education has ordered immediate closure of tertiary institutions, secondary and primary schools nationwide following the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country and as part of measures to contain the spread. This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono. According to a communique on Thursday, Echono who gave the order on behalf of the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, also noted that all 104 Unity Schools in the country should close on or before the 26th of March, 2020 as a proactive step aimed at preventing the spread of the dreaded Corona virus. We have directed all higher institutions to close this weekend. Unity Schools that have completed their exams are to close immediately. Others are to hurry and close the latest on 26th March,” the statement partly read. The Premier league football season could restart in July amidst the coronavirus pandemic and last 4- 5 weeks according to a new report. According to a report by Football London, the Premier League, EFL, the FA and the government had a conference call on Saturday and they all discussed the possibility of starting leagues in July and the clubs will try and wrap up all the games within "four to six weeks" with no fans in attendance. The US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria have said that the American citizens who have decided to return back to the US will sign a promissory note to pay for the full cost of the seat(s) on the flight. SANWO-OLU - THERE WILL NO MORE BE CURFEW FOR LAGOS RESIDENTS

The Lagos state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has stated that there will no longer be any curfew in the state. The curfew had been planned by the government to allow the fumigation exercise of public space. Relying on experts advice, the Governor said the disinfectant is non toxic, noting that the exercise has commenced. He said:- “I am pleased to note that we have taken possession of over 200 disinfecting machines, and starting today, we will be disinfecting all major highways, bus stops, markets, parks and other public areas.” The Governor also said during a live press conference that if there is a need for curfew, government will not hesitate to impose it. For now, everything remains the way they are.

AKURE EXPLOSION, GOVERNOR VISITS SITE AND TELLS CAUSE

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu on Saturday visited the scene of an explosion that rocked a suburb of Akure, the state capital. Residents of Iluabo were shocked by an explosion that occurred in the area at about 1 am on Saturday. The explosion made a large excavation on the road and the impact was felt kilometres away from the scene. Residents trooped towards the scene. According to the State’s Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie, the explosive belonged to a construction company based in Edo state. Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has reportedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), according to a video he released on social media Saturday night. Mr El-Rufai becomes the second governor to test positive for the virus after Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed was confirmed days ago. The governor said that he is in self-isolation as required by the case management guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and remains asymptomatic.
